Getting a job with no experience

Getting a job with no experience – 3 tips from Moyyn

Navigating the job market as a freshly graduated student is not an easy thing to do. With little to no experience, finding a fitting job can be a challenge. Very few companies post jobs where experience is not required. But you have to start somewhere! It is a common problem, but the good news is that you can still do it. Getting a job with no experience is not impossible!

There are some easy tips and tricks on getting a job with no experience. The same tricks can also be used if you are looking for a new job, in a new field. Let’s say you have worked your whole career in the marketing field, but you would love to get into finance. How will you manage? Well, that’s what I am here to tell you. Here are 3 tips on getting a job with no experience for you to follow.

1. Tailor your application

Experience or not, this is something you should always do. Tailor your application to fit the job you are hoping to get. Expand your thinking, and go beyond work experience. Did you take any relevant courses? Or did you do any projects or internships which fit the job description? Maybe you volunteered?

Compare all that you have done to the job description. Is it focusing more on leadership skills, or maybe the ability to work well in a team? Whenever you find something fitting to your experience, highlight that in your resume. Yes, it takes time, but I’ll be worth it.

2. Unsolicited application

Try spending a third of your job search time on writing unsolicited applications. There are loads of companies which aren’t posting job ads, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t looking. A good company is always looking to add the right people to their workforce.

Send them an email with a cover letter, stating why you would like to work for their company. A company might be wanting to start hiring soon, or growing and deciding to bring in an entry level person. There will be far less competition, and you’ll most likely end up at a company which invests in their employees career advancements. Win-win!

3. Network

Before sending out any application, check your network! Do you know anyone at the company that could refer you? Being referred is a powerful way to get noticed by the company, as you come recommended and therefore seem less risky.

I know it might be hard to ask for a favour, but you’ll actually be doing them a favour in return. Most companies offer a referral bonus, so if they end up hiring you, your friend will actually get paid for it. Check your LinkedIn if you know anyone who works at a company which is hiring. That way, you’ll actually save time on the job-search too.

Stay organized

If you follow these 3 steps you’re on a good way to getting a job with no experience! But it’s easy to get lost in the process, so make sure you stay organized. Let’s say you end up applying for over 20 jobs. It’s highly unlikely that you will remember all of them. Which is why you should track your applications.

The easiest is probably by using an Excel spreadsheet. Put in the companies you applied for, the job position, the date, where you applied etc. That way, you can easier track your application, and check for emails in your spam folder/the databases you used.
